Motif Art Studio
SAMARA CAMP, WESTERN SAHARA
Motif Art Studio is a small space for contemporary art practices, interactions and experimentation. It is located in the Samara refugee camp in southwest Algeria. Established in 2016, the studio was designed and built by Sahrawi artist, Mohamed Sleiman Labat. Motif Art Studio focuses on the growing phenomenon of family gardens and the knowledge of how to grow food in the specific context of the Hamada Desert. The studio tends to a garden and seed bank and experiments with Sandoponics – cultivation in sand. Motif Art Studio highlights how art can facilitate a shift from dependence on global food aid towards local and regional based interventions, economies and food sovereignty.
