Tlayolan

BERLIN, GERMANY

Tlayolan is a cultural and agricultural initiative based in Berlin, devoted to preserving and promoting the rich traditions surrounding maize– a staple food deeply embedded in Mexican culture. The name “Tlayolan,” derived from the Nahuatl language, means “land that produces much corn” or “place where life-giving seeds abound.” The Tlayolan project not only celebrates Mexican agricultural and culinary heritage but also addresses pressing contemporary issues such as environmental sustainability and food security. One issue the initiative highlights is the risks posed to traditional small farmers by the encroachment of large agricultural corporations. Tlayolan shines as a vibrant community hub by organizing a variety of events, including traditional cooking sessions, workshops and harvest ceremonies. Through their "Cocina 0Km" initiative, Tlayolan underscores the importance of consuming local, seasonal produce bringing the flavors of Mexican cuisine to Berlin by using ingredients sourced directly from their gardens and local producers.
