Seeds of Climate Change

Orache

ATRIPLEX HORTENSIS

Atriplex hortensis, more commonly known as orache or garden orache. It has been cultivated for centuries, considering its leaves are edible and integrated into numerous staple dishes around the world. Widespread through time, Atriplex hortensis has played an important part in both agriculture and cuisine. Staple in the diets of Romans and Medieval times, its mild flavor similar to that of spinach, coupled with its ability to thrive in some of the less fertile soils, gave rise to its importance throughout history not only as a culinary item but also as a forage crop. Atriplex hortensis is highly tolerant to saline soils and to drought, hence can easily adapt to new climatic conditions and less predictable weather.
