Seeds of Climate Change
LYCOPERSICON LYCOPERSICON
Piennolo del Vesuvio is a tomato variety linked to the volcanic lands of Mount Vesuvius, Italy. This tomato is small, round, bright red in color, and has a very rich and sweet flavor. This variety of tomato grows perfectly in volcanic soil and in the hot and dry Mediterranean climate, showing tolerance to water stress. Part of the reason it is resilient has to do with the thickness of the skin of the tomato, which reduces water loss and slows down evaporation. Piennolo del Vesuvio is a type of tomato usually preserved for months by being hung up on branches. This month-long conservation is possible due to its thick skin which slows down water evaporation. Due to its thick skin and its rich flavor it is best used for preparing sauces or being cooked.
