Yedikule Lettuce

LACTUCA SATIVA

Yedikule lettuce is an old Turkish variety of Lactuca sativa with specific peculiarities and a rather rich cultural heritage. Hailing from the historic district of Yedikule in Istanbul, the plant is named after the Yedikule Fortress, one of the Landmark Points of Istanbul. Its very adaptability to the local climatic and soil conditions has given it the opportunity to pass down generations while retaining its position in Turkish cuisine. This particular lettuce has been grown for as long as anyone can remember in every Turkish garden and cooked in every kitchen. Traditionally, Yedikule lettuce is prominent in both local agriculture and gastronomy. Its crispy structure and flavor have secured it a forefront place in many traditional dishes of Turkish cuisine, mainly in salads and meze.
